Then CHDSK came up and ran--Stage 1 file verification completed quickly. Common SMART errors are: Hard disk failure is imminent. I know for a fact that defective optical drives will pass Delldiag, virtually no matter how long or how many retries it takes, as long as they eventually succeed. You can believe that *sometimes* you can cheat it with an OS repair but the sad truth is, it's only a short term delay. Western Digital offers a product replacement service so I contacted them. I've never had a hard drive crash on me before and just wanted to be sure (though I probably would have gotten confirmation enough when it became completely unusable). In the end it maybe worth re-installing Windows afresh.
